Around the middle of the 1700s hit German Protestants in Pennsylvania, in an area called Nazareth. They created a sugar cookie called Nazareth Sugar Cookie. Inspiration for Nazareth Sugar Cookie recipe probably came from an earlier, unleavened cookie called sprawl.
Today, sugar cookies are quite popular as they are quite easy to decorate. Here is a simple sugar cookie recipe I've used a few times.

Ingridients for Sugar Cookie Recipe:
- 9 ounces of unsalted butter
- 1.5 cups of sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon fine grained salt
- 1/2 tablespoon baking powder
- 3.6 (or 3.5) cups all-purpose flour
Method:
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). In a small bowl, stir together flour, baking powder and baking powder. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until smooth. Whisk eggs and vanilla. Gradually blend in dry ingredients. Roll rounded teaspoonfuls of dough into balls and place on ungreased cookie sheets.
- Bake 8 to 10 minutes in the preheated oven, or until golden. Let stand on cookie sheet two minutes before removing to cool on a rack.
